Jadini Beach Hotel Tree Planting -- May 2001 - written by Robert Mwanyasi
One of the threats affecting the colobus and other primates on the south coast is habitat destruction - deforestation.  When The Colobus Trust was set up , there were less primates and more intact habitats, but through development in Diani, and the efforts of the Trust in our campaign to save the lives of primates - this trend began to change.  Primate numbers were increasing, but unfortunately, habitat area started to decrease due to human activities and commercial development.

A forest survey was carried out and found that more bare areas have land for possible trees.  The Colobus Trust took advantage of the opportunity to plant trees in areas with both exotic and indigenous species for future generations of monkeys.  This programme is also designed to help with pest management in hotels by creating more sustainable habitats for south coast primates.  In this event in May 2001, the Trust staff worked with volunteers and local schools in Diani to plant over 120 seedlings on the grounds of the Jadini Beach Hotel.
