Painted Vervet Shaved and Released (17 October 2003)

A number of calls came in to the Trust regarding a vervet painted red at a local hotel. The monkey was part of a problematic troop that raids the hotel buffet tables. Some people believe that by painting or otherwise disfiguring a monkey, it will scare off the rest of the troop.   This only works for a short while until it is recognised as a member of the troop.

On 17th of October, we managed to capture the vervet after five trapping sessions as the vervet was trap-shy after the initial incident of being caught and painted.  The monkey was brought to the Trust, anesthetised and shaved as the oil paint had matted the hair together.  This is basically harmless and the hair grows back within a short while.  Once the anaesthetic wore off, the vervet was released back into its home troop.  The procedure took about two hours from capture to release.
