On
December 3rd, a man came by the Colobus Trust. He was sent by his
employer to report a monkey on the grounds of the Marine Station in
Diani.
Upon arrival at the Marine Station, the Sykes troop was still present
though they had moved away from the immediate area of the adult female
Sykes monkey on the ground. This gave us the room to capture her
to bring her back to the Trust without further stress on the group.
Lying on the ground unable to move her legs, she was easily
anesthetized.
After a month in rehabilitation, receiving vitamin B complex and
antibiotics, the use of her legs return though the feet still have little strength.
We expect that they will
also return to function properly with time.
On
January 13th, the female's troop was located and she was released.
She quickly jumped out of the cage into the bushes. She was
followed that day and several days later. After a number of weeks
she had started to gain weight and was doing well with the troop.

| Still paralyzed. Kept in
small cage to facilitate daily injections. |
As movement in
the legs returned, the female was moved to a larger cage to promote
movement. |
