TOURIST SURVEY |
|
October 2002 -- This survey
was part of our cure activities during October 2002, and was of 455
tourists in Diani. The survey was wide-ranging; encompassing
tourists of 19 different nationalities from 18 different hotels.
The aim of the survey was to assess the attitudes of tourists towards
Diani and its environment and to understand the tourists awareness of
the impact tourism is having on Diani’s environment. It was also
designed to find out how concerned tourists are for the wildlife and
remaining forest patches in Diani. By gaining such information tourist
related environmental problems can be better addressed.
The Trust uses the information gained in this survey to assist in the
protection of the remaining wildlife in Diani in 2003 - working
alongside landowners and hotel managers to achieve this goal and believe
that the protection of the environment can be of benefit to all
stakeholders.
Important Findings:
- 70% said they would be more likely to choose a hotel if it was in
a forest conservation area
- 93% said that Diani’s environment (Forest and wildlife) increased
the level of enjoyment of their holiday
- 81% said it was enjoyable to have monkeys in hotel grounds
- 64% said they did not intend to enquire as to whether woodcarvings
are made from a sustainable source
