COLOBUS TRUST SPECIAL PROJECTS & INITIATIVES |
|
A key aim of the Colobus Trust is to identify and undertake conservation
projects that will directly increase awareness, knowledge and protection
of Kenyan primates. |
|
Over the six years of the Trust’s existence we have carried out many
research projects and projects that aim to reduce the impact of human
development. Below is the list of projects currently being undertaken by
the Colobus Trust and a selection of past projects. There are other,
more detailed lists of the Trust's work in specific areas, including Research,
Animal Welfare,
Surveys and
Community & Fundraising Events.
|
|
CURRENT SPECIAL PROJECTS & INITIATIVES |
|
These projects are running in 2005 and 2006.
- Diani Sykes and Vevet Census - The Sykes and Vervet
population in Diani has traditionally been largely unknown. The Colobus trust is
planning research to identify the troops and demography.
- Colo-cones - A new innovative
solution to preventing electrocutions, and perhaps other problems.
This potential solution needs to be made and tested.
- Crop Raiding Primates Solutions -
A project addressing crop raiding primates on farmers fields will
begin in the middle of the 2004. The primates are affecting local
farmers significantly and we will look for innovative solutions to
address this issue.
- Survey of Diani Forest
- The surveys will work with local
land owners to make sustainable activities to preserving the remaining
patches of forest.
- Primate Pest Behaviour - Continuing our
work on primate pest behaviour, we will work with a number of
solutions trying to solve the hotel pest problem humanly including
monitoring the baboon vasectomy programme.
- Good Woods - Promoting the use
of sustainable tree species in the tourist wood carving industry
rather than forest hard woods.

PAST SPECIAL PROJECTS & INITIATIVES |
|
Below is a list of projects that have been undertaken by the Colobus
Trust from 1997-2005.
- Kaya Forest Disturbance Survey -
A study of the three sacred forests have been done to understand the
extent of deforestation.
- Baboon Demography - As part of the baboon vasectomy
programme the Trust is monitoring the demography of the Baboon
troops in Diani (2000-2003).
- 2001 Angolan Colobus Census - The Trust in
association with Julie Anderson of the Institute of Primatology London
undertook a 4 month census to identify the population of colobus in
Kwale district, south coast Kenya.
- DeBrazza's Monkey Rehabilitation and
Release - In July 2000, the Colobus Trust and Kenya Wildlife
Service (KWS) reintroduced a juvenile deBrazza’s monkey into the
national park in Kitale, western Kenya.
- 1999 Colobus Guereza Translocation - The Colobus
Trust carried out the Translocation of 14 Colobus Gurezza in 1999. The
Colobus survival was threatened by habitat degradation, poaching for
their distinctive coats and persecution as agricultural pest. The
colobus where moved to a protected forest where they are regularly
followed to monitor their progress.
-
Colobridges in Zanzibar
- The Colobus Trust joined forces with WSPA to reduce the threat of a
busy road through the home of Zanzibar red colobus. The Colobus Trust
lent their expertise in constructing a new colobridge. One
bridge has been constructed and has been successfully used
(1999-2000).
- Baboon Vasectomy
- The Colobus Trust in conjunction with KWS undertook a year-long
baboon vasectomy programme in Diani to reduce the very high growth
rate of the baboon population (1999-2000).
- 23 New Colobridges - The Colobus
Trust has erected 23 colobridges along the Diani beach road with the generous funding
from many individual donors (1997-2001).
- Utilisation Survey of three coastal
forests 2003 - The Trust surveyed sacred forests called
Kaya in cooperation with the Coastal Forest Conservations Unit (CFCU)
to analyse usage, de-forestation practices, species diversity and
map boundaries.
- Colobus Diet Anaylsis - The diet of the
Angolan colobus in Diani has been studied by the
Trust during the first half of 2003. Was analyzed and used in a
phd thesis for the colobus census in Kwale District of Kenya.
- Colobus Demography Diani - The Trust has so far
carried out three years worth of research in the demography of Colobus in
Diani. The research continues to cover the whole of the Diani area, a total of
c. 60 troops of colobus.
- Diani Baboon Census - Baboons are
considered a pest in Diani. The census is part of a greater project to
understand and thus be able to tackle the primate pest problems.
