Colobus Trust Home Troop Members

Mroho took over the troop at the end of 2005 after the previous alpha male, Makali, was killed in a road traffic accident. He is the only adult male and is the biggest member of the troop. He defends his group of females from other invading males and makes sure that all members of the troop are safe. He is the father of Kioko and Cara.

Kilema is the oldest member of the troop. She is easily distinguished from other troop members because she is missing 1/2 of her left arm as a result of an electrocution incident. However this has not limited her ability to leap through the trees. The other females of the troop help her carry her infants when the troop is moving around. She gave birth to her 9th infant, Kioko (the infant in the picture), in Feb 2006. Unfortunately, Kioko was hit by a car on Diani Beach Highway and killed when she was only a few months old.

Kili is the elder of the two juvenile males in the troop. He is the son of Karibu and can usually be found playing with Hoyo, the other young male. They chase each other through the trees or disturb their mothers when they are trying to rest. He is almost at the age where he should be leaving his natal troop to establish a troop of his own.

Hoyo was born in June 2004.  He is the son of Hamisi (who passed away in 2006) and can generally be found messing about with Kili, the other juvenile male in the troop.  They chase each other through the trees or disturb their mothers when they are trying to rest.  Hopefully he and Kili will remain friends until it becomes time for them to leave their natal troop and establish troops of their own.

Kwanza was born in September 2002 and is the daughter of Kilema. She just reached adulthood and recently gave birth to the newest infant of the troop, Cara! This is her first infant and she has been doing an excellent job taking care of it.

Kagendo is the youngest female of the troop. She was born in December 2003 to Kilema. Although she is young she is growing up fast and can already be seen taking care of the infant of the troop and keeping the two juvenile males under control.

Karibu (which means "Welcome!" in Kiswahili) was born in January 1999 and is the daughter of Kilema. She has given birth to 3 babies of which Kili is the only surviving one. We hope she will be getting pregnant and adding another infant to the troop soon!

<Picture coming soon!!>

Cara is the newest member of the troop - born in November 2006. This new infant has just recently turned black and white, and is  Kwanza's first daughter. Cara has just started venturing out on her own away from her mother for short periods of time!
