The Colobus Trust, a
not-for-profit organization established in 1997 on the southern
coast of
Kenya to promote the conservation, preservation and protection of
primates, in particular the Angolan Black and White
Colobus monkey (Colobus
angolensis palliatus).
Updated 04 September 2007
Diani colobus census was carried out last
month with the help of the volunteers. Now the data is being analyzed and will be ready next week.
However ,road accidents are still taking toll on the primates in
Diani. So, more must be done on educating the public to change
their attitude towards driving too fast on the beach road. Please
help in conserving the primates.
Naming the colobus troop members in the new
place. We are currently identifying the members of the two troops
of colobus monkeys here at the Trust. For each one a suitable
name will be picked in attribute to its behavior. Have any
suggestions for names?
The
Colobus Trust is settled in the new place
Its
good, its beautiful and we are settled.
We are now open for eco-tours and all the programs are back in
track.
The monkeys in rehabilitation are loving it in their large well
furnished cages. This will help in quick rehabilitation since space
stress is long a thing of the past now.
The volunteers both international and local as well, are enjoying
themselves in the house and are very keen in participating in daily
activities run within the Trust.

We
have been assisted in the costs of the move by a number of generous
supporters from around the world, to whom we are very
grateful. So THANK YOU!!
Appeal to purchase a permanent site for the Trust
Although the new property is
rented, we are guaranteed a 5 year lease. This means we have
some breathing space to raise the funds to purchase a permanent site
for the Trust. However 5 years is not long to raise the kind of
money we need (approx. 250,000 GBP). If you are able to
contribute any amount towards our appeal to purchase a permanent
site for the Trust, we would be grateful.
Any donation, large or small,
will help us greatly.

Staff changes at the Trust
We have made some staff changes at the Trust.
Jophie Clark, the Executive Director, has moving role to become the
Fundraising Director for the organisation. We have so many pressing
funding needs that we feel we need a dedicated member of staff
working on this.
Jophie has been replaced as
Executive Director by Onesmus Macharia. Macharia comes to the Trust with a wealth of wildlife management
experience. He formerly worked for the Kenya Wildlife
Service in this area as Senior Warden. He has also worked
in various private wildlife sanctuaries in Kenya. He has a
MSc in Conservation Ecology.
Macharia joined the Trust in March 2007.
Stuart Semple left the Trust in
April after finishing his one year term as a voluntary Assistant
Manager. We are so grateful to him for all he achieved during
his year as Assistant Manager, and the time that he gave to the
Trust. He has been replaced by Paul Gacheru. Paul joined the Trust in April 2007. He is a
BSc graduate in Wildlife Management and has since worked in primate
research, including with De brazza and chimpanzees in
Kenya.
